@WW1 Poem ~ "The Spirit" by GA Studdert-Kennedy read by Pat Nelson
This Poem reflects the grim conditions of World War One, with its references to bloody trenches, empty bellies, and the constant threat of death. The repetitive phrase "Carry On" conveys the resilience and determination of the soldiers despite the overwhelming challenges they faced. Within the context of its time period, the poem aligns with the widespread patriotic sentiment and emphasis on stoicism during the World War One. It echoes the propaganda and public discourse of the era, which glorified the heroism and sacrifice of the soldiers. However, the poem also hints at the growing disillusionment and weariness that would eventually lead to the ani-war movement of the post war years. Compared to the author's other works, this poem stands out for its somber tone and focus on the hardships of war. While Kennedy's other writings often explore themes of spirituality and faith, this poem offers a brutal honest depiction of the physical and emotional toll of combat. When war broke out Geoffrey Anketell Studdert-Kennedy, believed it was a cause worth fighting for. He travelled to Flanders as an army Chaplain. He experienced life on the front with ordinary soldiers and felt that he should also share their hardships. He was given the nickname "Woodbine Willie" for giving Woodbine cigarettes to soldiers he met, as well as aid to injured and dying soldiers. He showed huge bravery and self-sacrifice, earning the Military Cross for helping soldiers under enemy fire. When he died King George V sent a telegram of condolence. More than 1,700 people filed past his coffin in a single day as it lay in a Liverpool church. Touchingly, former servicemen sent a wreath with a packet of Woodbine cigarettes at its heart.
