"The Holly and The Ivy" ~ Probably of Pagan origin with themes of fertility, (masculine Holly and feminine Ivy,) this Carol would have been sung as a tribal chorus and dance-dialogue between lads and lasses. The words have been printed many times over the centuries, in books and on broadsides, but it probably dates back further than the earliest printed version, via oral tradition, and even has echoes of the ‘merry organ’ mentioned in Chaucer’s Nonnes Preestes Tale.
