"It's a Long Way to Tipperary" or "It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary" is an English music hall song first performed in 1912 by Jack Judge, and written by Jack Judge and Harry Williams. It was recorded in 1914 by the Irish tenor John McCormack which helped it's worldwide popularity and used as a marching song for the troops in the First World War and is remembered as a song of that war. Welcoming signs, in the town of Tipperary Ireland humorously declared, "You've come a long way" in reference to the song!! British troops marching to 'Mons' sang it. Daily Mail correspondent George Curnrock saw the Irish regiment the 'Connaught Rangers' singing the song as they marched through 'Boulorne' on August 13th 1914. Commentators considered the song appeal revealed characteristically British qualities of being cheerful in the face of hardship. The Times suggested that "Tipperary" may be less dignified, but it, and whatever else our soldiers may choose to sing will be dignified by their bravery, their patience, and their long suffering kindness... We would rather have their deeds than all the German songs in the World!!... John Francis McCormack, was an Irish lyric singer celebrated for his performances of operatic and popular song repertoires, and renowned for his diction and breath control. He was a Papal Count. McCormack became a naturalised American citizen before returning to live in Ireland. He bought a home near the sea. "Glena" Booterstown. Dublin. After years of increasing poor health, and a series in infectious illnesses he died at home in September 1945.
