From the Album: Rawer Than Raw Year: 2020 Blues legend Bobby Rush has experienced firsthand the waves of change; the 86-year-old musician overcame COVID-19 earlier this year and has lived his entire life wrestling with racial inequality. Rush’s new album Rawer Than Raw is due out August 28 on Deep Rush/Thirty Tigers and in it the artist goes back to the basics of blues. Rush was born Emmett Ellis Jr. in Louisiana, the great-grandchild of slaves from Mississippi, and later changed his name to Bobby Rush out of respect for his father who was a preacher. Rush’s family relocated to Arkansas and later Chicago. Rush admits that it was taxing yet fulfilling to reflect on his old friends who have all passed away and their influences on his life and music. Rawer Than Raw has five original songs written by Rush and six covers paying tribute to Skip James, Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Muddy Waters and of course, Howlin’ Wolf. The title Rawer Than Raw is a nod to how this 2020 album is rawer than Raw, the 2007 record that found Bobby Rush devoting himself to acoustic blues for the first time in his lengthy career. Ever since its release, Rush has occasionally returned to such stripped-down settings, so Rawer Than Raw doesn't feel like the departure that its predecessor does but it remains a bracing listen. Hearing Rush play with just a guitar or two is a different experience than his full-bodied soul-blues revues. He remains a commanding presence, so much so that his voice and personality threaten to overwhelm his bare-bones accompaniment, yet these skeletal arrangements show how nuanced he can be. Rush dials things back a notch on "Sometimes I Wonder" and digs deep into his soul on "Hard Times," offering evidence that at heart, he's a song stylist. He can still be lascivious as ever -- witness the happily lewd "Shake It for Me" -- and that's a skill that gives his covers of the overly familiar "Don't Start Me Talkin'" and "Dust My Broom" some kick: these aren't rote covers, they're interpretations from a blues master who has more arrows in his quiver than his rowdy reputation may suggest.
