Hiking with friends in the Blue Ridge Mountains is always wondrous. This is ancient earth. The Appalachians first formed roughly 480 million years ago during the Ordovician Period. They once reached elevations similar to those of the Alps and the Rocky Mountains before experiencing natural erosion. The amount of history is unfathomable and humbling. As the closest mountain range to my hometown of St. Augustine, I find myself learning and exploring these epic lands more and more every year. My close friends Charles and Danielle live in Tennessee and we found a window to meet up for a few days. We stayed at Van Hook Campground just north of Highlands, hiked the Yellow Mountain Trail, and explored some of the waterfalls along the Cullasaja River.
