Brains Applied's video: The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator - Scam Or Valid Test

Hey everyone, All of you have probably heard of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (abbreviation: MBTI). The personality test that is really famous for it's personality codes such as INFJ, ESTP, etc. The test, which was invented by Katherine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers after they had learned about one of Carl Jung's theories' about personality types. According to this test everyone fits into one of the two categories of each dimension: Introvert or Extravert Sensing or Intuition Thinking or Feeling Judging or Perceiving MBTI is famous around the world, it's used by many companies and organizations and the company that owns the publishing rights (Consulting Psychologists Press) makes a profit of more than $20 million each year. But the question is: is MBTI a scam or is it a valid test? There are many papers that have been written about MBTI (although very little of them have been published in major journals). An estimated 30%-50% of the existing research papers, however, are in some way or another linked to the CPP, which means that it might be biased. This explains why the existing research seems to be really divided. The major issue with the MBTI is that Carl Jung's theory, which was the original inspiration for the test, was hypothetical. Jung got his inspiration from interviews and observations but the theory had never been tested. Katherine and Isabel, who never had any formal psychological education, turned this into their own framework. As far as I could find, most of their empirical studies happened after the original MBTI was published and they only made minor changes to it. Another issue with the MBTI test is that no one strictly fits into these categories. Even Carl Jung said that there's no such thing as a pure introvert or a pure introvert. Like with many things in life, people's level of introvertness will follow the Bell Curve; most people will be in the middle and few people will be on the outer edges. This means, however, that it's very likely (about 50%, numbers vary per study) that you will end in different categories when you try the test again after several weeks.
