The house of representatives could pass the 1.9 trillion dollar stimulus package as soon as next week. After that, it will be up to the Senate, which has a 50-50 split between republicans and democrats, with Vice President Kamala Harris being the tiebreaker vote. To pass the Senate, the Democrats will need all party members to vote in favor of the bill. One of the democrats- Senator Joe Manchin, says he will not partake in democratic efforts to force through elements of the packages that violate senate budget restrictions. He will not vote for something that the senate parliamentarian doesn't agree with. This situation is significant because if Joe Manchin doesn't vote in favor of the bill, along with another democratic senator such as Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona who has also opposed elements of the bill- they can block the bill from happening. This would mean the following wouldn't happen: $1400 stimulus checks to the American people, $400 unemployment boast, the expanded child tax credits, an eviction ban extension (currently, the eviction ban expires on March 31st and raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour. Republicans are still frustrated with the income limitations on the $1400 stimulus checks, and the $15 minimum wage is continuing to get a lot of pushback. Larry Hogan, the governor of Maryland, says the democrats should stop including things in the economic relief package that has nothing to do with the pandemic. We know President Biden favors increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour. We also know the many promises Biden made in a town hall earlier this week, such as stating... The Stimulus package will pass by March 14th, the date unemployment benefits expire. Another significant promise unrelated to the stimulus package but is still substantial is that Biden says we will cancel $10,000 of student loan debt from each borrower."
