Video points : 1. There's no such thing as "addictive personalities," only depressed individuals who are seeking a dopamine release. 2. Humans can get addicted to anything, because it's the novelty (newness of something) that provides the dopamine release. 3. Humans can get addicted to drama and creating more it, because it's the novelty and excitement of something that provides the dopamine release. 4. Is drama really bad? After all, we need dopamine for reward and motivation. Without dopamine, we'd lose motivation to do anything and would likely die. While there are certainly "good" types of drama, there are also types of drama that we should avoid for optimal happiness and health. 5. Dopamine is important, but there are positive ways of getting a dopamine release instead of negative ways. If you notice a tendency to self-sabotage, or to consistently create more drama, or more of the same negative results, try engaging in activities that will provide you dopamine in a healthy way-- rather than an unhealthy one. Some healthy ways to get a dopamine release: 1. Seek novelty in a constructive way. Try taking a different way to work than you usually take, try going to a new restaurant for lunch, or picking something different on the menu than what you usually get. Try a different workout in the gym. Having new experiences doesn't need to be costly or time consuming. Making small changes in your regular routine can have 2. Take some time to evaluate your actions and why you do what you do. Are there any repeating patterns you find yourself stuck in over and over again? Awareness is the first step towards making a positive change or transformation. Ask yourself why is it that you're repeatedly drawn to the same situations over and over again. Think back to your childhood, any insecurities that you may be compensating for, or any hidden motives that may be keeping you stuck in the same sort of dramatic circumstances. 3. Find a healthy way to get that dopamine release. Dopamine is necessary for life. It affects our pleasure & reward system, and our drive and motivation to do anything. Rather than turning to unhealthy addictions or drama causing behaviors, focus on getting your dopamine fix in a healthy way. Have a regular workout routine in place. Eat serotonin producing foods that are rich in tryptophan, like chocolate, eggs, oats, pumpkin seeds, tart cherry, chickpeas, or turkey. And cultivate more activities and hobbies in your life that are intrinsically rewarding, rather than extrinsically rewarding. In other words, activities that bring you pleasure even without the approval of others. Activities such as learning a new instrument, painting a piece of art, drawing, writing, reading, engaging in a sport where you can get "in the zone" or in a state of "FLOW" - doing something that requires your complete attention, focus, and mastery-- like rock climbing or surfing. If you can get your dopamine release in healthy ways like the ones I just mentioned, you'll become much less prone to seeking out activities that are unhealthy or can lead to addiction.
