Please support this Petition https://www.epetitions.brisbane.qld.gov.au/petition/view/pid/1145 To name a Picnic Pavilion at Frew Park after Robyn Ebbern. Wendy Turnbull Statement. Robyn Ebbern may not be a name that a lot of people recognize but for me as a junior tennis player she was someone I looked up to. I dreamed of playing and winning Grand Slam tournaments and there was Robyn, partnering the great Margaret Smith Court in winning the doubles at the Australian and US Championships. Robyn could not have been more local – living right there behind the Milton Tennis courts. It is inspirational when a local person is able to achieve success on the international stage and that is what our youngsters need to know and have role models - that someone such as Robyn Ebbern was able to play the international tennis circuit and be successful. I believe that she should be recognized for being a true Brisbane and Queensland tennis personality and I fully support the petition for naming the “Robyn Ebbern Picnic Pavilion” overlooking the Wendy Turnbull Green at Frew Park. The Brisbane Tennis Trail is not only unique in the tennis world but in the world. With the Olympics being staged in Brisbane in 2032, the Brisbane Tennis Trail should make sure none of our tennis heroes is overlooked and we should not wait to honour Robyn with the naming of the “Robyn Ebbern Picnic Pavilion” Born in Brisbane, Lived next store to Milton Tennis Courts from 1959, now known as Frew Park. And lived through the 1974 Floods at Milton. Ebbern and Margaret Smith won the Australian Championships doubles in 1962 and 1963 and the U.S. Championships doubles in 1963. In the same year in the French Championships, they were defeated in the final by Renée Schuurman and Ann Haydon-Jones. In January 1962, she reached the final of the Tasmanian Championships in which she was defeated by Margaret Smith.[1] In July 1963 she won the singles title at the Swiss Championships, played in Gstaad, defeating Lesley Turner in the final in straight sets.[2] In the doubles final, she teamed up with Turner and won against Renée Schuurman and Norma Baylon.[3] In November 1963, she partnered with Smith to win the South Australian doubles title against Turner and Jan Lehane.[4] In the 1965 Australian Championships mixed doubles, she and Owen Davidson shared the championship with Court and John Newcombe. The final was not played. In 1966, Ebbern and Bill Bowrey were defeated in the final by Judy Tegart and Tony Roche. According to Lance Tingay of The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail, Ebbern was ranked World No. 9 at year-end in 1964.
