British Council India's video: Highlights: Indian Literature on the World Stage and Multilingualism and Empowerment

@Highlights: 'Indian Literature on the World Stage' and 'Multilingualism and Empowerment'
India and the UK have an intertwined, complex and rich history in the field of literature and there are several novels by both Indian and British authors that depict the shared history of both countries. Two author events – held in Kolkata and Chennai – helped us celebrate this shared heritage in literature as part of the India/UK Together Season of Culture programme. This video provides key highlights from these two author events held by British Council’s English Programmes teams. The events were organised to celebrate India/UK Together, a Season of Culture: https://www.britishcouncil.in/programmes/india-uk-together In Kolkata on 17 September 2022, we explored Indian literature on the world stage with authors Geetanjali Shree, Anupama Raju and Lady Kishwar Desai. The conversation was moderated by Dr Debanjan Chakrabarti, Director East and Northeast India, British Council. Sharing their experiences, the authors talked about the role and importance of translation, writing for different genres and audiences and the need to provide freedom of expression for students to foster creativity. In Chennai on 24 September 2022, on the topic of multilingualism and empowerment, we heard from authors Meena Kandasamy, Daljit Nagra and Maithreyi Karnoor. The conversation was moderated by Janaka Pushpanathan, Director South India, British Council. We explored linguistic hierarchy and diversity in the context of the classroom and the authors shared their own experiences of how equity can be promoted in the context of writing.
