Three Astartes Legions ( Blood Angels, White Scars and Imperial Fists ) together with Adeptus Custodes, Sisters of Silence, three Titan Legions and million and a half Imperial Army troops defended Holy Terra agaisnt Chaos invasion force three or four times their own size. In the end Imperials won, but at a great cost. Primarch Sanguinius was slain by Horus, who was in turn slain by Emperor of Mankind. But not before Horus was able to inflict deadly blow to the Emperor, forcing him to sit upon Golden Throne to which he resides up to 41'st millennium.
