Burnet Institute's video: Understanding the microbiome s role in HIV prevention

@Understanding the microbiome's role in HIV prevention
Globally, women carry nearly half of the HIV burden. Young women in sub-Saharan Africa are particularly vulnerable. Burnet's Professor Gilda Tachedjian is currently investigating the vaginal microbiome. The microbiome is the varied communities of bacteria, fungi and viruses that inhabit the different regions of our bodies. Recent studies have shown that beneficial lactobacilli can protect women against HIV while vaginal bacteria depleted of lactobacilli can promote HIV transmission. Your donation to Burnet’s Eliminate HIV Appeal will help us understand the microbiome, and with this knowledge we can work out the best way to keep these women safe from HIV infection. Burnet Institute is an Australian, unaligned, not-for-profit, independent organisation that links medical research with practical action to help solve devastating health problems. This sets us apart from other organisations. Find out more at https://burnet.edu.au/
