Burnet Institute's video: COVID-19 Global Update 9 October 2020: Professor Mike Toole AM

Burnet Institute Epidemiologist Professor Mike Toole AM provides an update on the global COVID-19 situation on 9 October 2020. He looks at global trends including accelerating second waves of infections in Europe, a comparison of COVID-19 incidences in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Lao PDR), and increasing cases in countries which until recently have staved off the virus, such as Jordan. Professor Toole examines mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which could present challenges in developing therapeutics for COVID-19. The D614G mutation has been found in almost all SARS-CoV-2 samples worldwide by the end of June 2020. Professor Toole also analyses overdispersion (superspreading) of COVID-19, and the conditions which allow this to happen.
