Can I upgrade my old security camera system to 4K? This is a very common question that we get at CCTV Camera Pros. These are security cameras that are hard wired to a DVR using coax cable and BNC connectors. If you have an old CCTV camera system, chances are that you can not simply buy 4K cameras, connect them to your existing DVR, and everything will work. If you have older analog CVBS cameras or even 1080p / 2mp BNC cameras, chances are that you bought your DVR at the same time as the cameras and it only supports those resolutions. First, you should determine if your existing DVR will support 4K cameras or if you needs a replacement DVR. The make and model of your DVR is most likely located on a silver sticker on the back or underside of your DVRs case. Search for a product specification online for your model DVR. Next, determine if your existing system is using pre-made security camera cables or if cable from a spool of RG59 Siamese or RG6 was used. If your system used pre-made cables (the ones with the BNC ends pre-attached and permanently attached), these will most likely not support 4K BNC cameras. The only way to know for sure is to test with a 4K security camera and DVR. If you need to replace your cable, then you may want to consider running CAT5e or CAT6 network cable and purchasing a new IP camera system instead of another CCTV system.
