He took them to his car and ran them illegally fishing for warrants. An officer may only "run" you if he has legally stopped you for a traffic violation .( He can only "run" the driver during a traffic stop and NOT the passenger} OR he can "run" you if he has a reasonable articulable suspicion or probabable cause of a crime .
