Natural Doctrine tries to be the step beyond Disgaea that Disgaea was beyond Fire Emblem: "Tactical RPGs are fun, but let's make them extra super complex and see how the numbers work out." And complex it is, with a hybrid grid-based AND freeform combat system that makes the player juggle tactical concerns like cover and blocking terrain against rather arbitrary bonuses to team attacks maximized by having the greatest distance between units. It's certainly unlike any other TRPG out there today... but that just means that there's a rather pronounced learning curve right up front.
