Makedonie skrývá mimořádné přírodní a kulturní poklady na malém území, kde se po tři tisíciletí potkávaly různé kultury. Zemi postupně ovládaly různé mocnosti, počínaje řeckou Makedonií, ztělesněnou Alexandrem Velikým, dále říše římská, byzantská a osmanská.
