CPMusicLibrary's video: Steps for viola and piano by Malcolm Forsyth

@Steps for viola and piano by Malcolm Forsyth
Program notes by the composer, 1978 In the summer of 1978, Forsyth acted as Composer-in-Residence at The Banff Centre, working with the young composers in the summer course of that year. As part of his contribution for the event, the American violist, Donald McInnes commissioned a work for viola and piano to be premiered there. Steps….. for viola and piano was the result and it was performed by McInnes and pianist Isabel Moore. Five short character sketches form the structure, each with its own particular character. The title reflects the composer’s first steps into the realm of solo string writing. 1. Buoyant presents vigorous figures in both instruments, with a slightly machine-like energy. 2. Strange Light is an ethereal piece inspired by stories in the news at the time of people “crossing over” and being enveloped in blissful white light. 3. Violent shows off the character of edginess of the viola accompanied by staccato energy in the piano. Some double-stopped effects present the violist with a challenge. 4. Colours is a reflection in sound of a swirling mixture of colour. Oscillating chords build and disintegrate in an expressive panoply. 5. Jocular is very light and dancing in character, the 5/8 metre giving a little jog to the step.
