Design Village 2016: c{AURA}gate California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Industrial Technology & Packaging Theme: Aura Award: People's Choice Honorable Mention: Best Craftsmanship Design Village is an architecture competition hosted by Cal Poly where college teams design, build, and live in structures in Poly Canyon. All structure materials must be carried to the site (0.8 miles of dirt road) using only human power, and all transportation devices (e.g. wheels) must be part of the structure's design. Teams set up Friday, show off their structures to the judges and visitors on Saturday, and tear down on Sunday, sleeping in the structures Friday and Saturday nights. The structure, made of corrugate, steel, and acrylic that refracts the sunlight, combines materials that are both solid and ephemeral. This contrast emulates the transitory, elusive nature of the aura - a feeling, an experience, a perception, yet something that can be neither defined nor quantified.
