Grace Award to Mark E. Fischbach aka Markiplier, a YouTuber with more than 26.6 million subscribers, for his longstanding support of CRI. Since 2013, Markiplier has creatively leveraged his 50.5 million followers across social media through fun events to raise over $500,000 for CRI’s programs and increase awareness for medical research and public health among young individuals. Host Joel McHale, known for his expansive 24-year entertainment career (Community, The Soup, @The Darkest Timeline with Ken Jeong & Joel McHale), is also a dedicated cancer research supporter and advocate. Over the years, he has hosted and taken part in numerous fundraisers, helping to raise millions for cancer research. James P. Allison, Ph.D. is the director of the CRI Scientific Advisory Council. He is the chair of Immunology, the executive director of the Immunotherapy Platform, and deputy director for Applied Research of Genitourinary Cancers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He helped identify the T cell antigen receptor, and discovered that blocking the CTLA-4 receptor on T cells enhances the immune system’s ability to eliminate tumors. This led to the development of the first approved checkpoint immunotherapy, the anti-CTLA-4 ipilimumab, for which he was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology alongside Dr. Tasuku Honjo for his work on PD-1. https://www.cancerresearch.org/about/scientific-advisory-council/james-allison Established in 1953, the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to harnessing our immune system’s power to control and potentially cure all cancers.
