www.cedarlakedance.com World Premiere: May 7, 2013, by Cedar Lake, The Joyce Theater, New York, NY. Choreography and Set Design: Andonis Foniadakis Music: Julien Tarride Costume Design: Tassos Sofroniou Lighting : Clifton Taylor Program Note: "I have experienced many large cities, and over time I've become more and more fascinated by their energy, specifically their heartbeat, pulse, rhythm, and man's place within their hectic social network. When I was asked to create a piece with Cedar Lake in New York City, the quintessential urban center, the time appeared right to investigate these themes. With Horizons, I'm exploring the internal and external influences of a city's relentless and persistent energy, its personal and impersonal qualities. How must we move through and interact with its daily cycles and how do we seek a sense of inner resolution and balance while living within such a frenetic environment." *This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Andonis Foniadakis, choreographer and dancer, grew up in the small city of Lerapetra in the southern part of the island of Crete in Greece. He began his dance training with Niki Papadaki at his local Lerapetra Dance School. From 1990-1992 he continued his study at the State Dance School in Athens. He studied classical ballet and diverse contemporary dance techniques as well as dance improvisation, theater, singing, acting and the martial art of kendo. Before his graduation he received the prestigious Maria Callas Scholarship to continue his studies at L'Ecole-Atelier Rudra-Béjart Lausanne, Switzerland from 1992-1994. Foniadakis has danced and collaborated with some of the most distinguished and recognized dance artists and companies of his time including Béjart Ballet Lausanne under the direction of Maurice Béjart, Lyon Opera Ballet, 1996-2002, under the direction of Yorgos Loukos, Saburo Teshigawara/Karas Company under the direction of Saburo Teshigawara, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Bern Ballet, William Forsythe, Bill T. Using the human figure as the basic element of a diverse and vivid dance experience, Apotosoma aims to question and explore the notion of individuality and personal expression within our society, the different aspects of the fragility of the human existence and the power of its' spirit are investigated in the company's creations. To date Apotosoma has created five full evening works choreographed by Foniadakis; Sensitive Screens Skins Intervals (2003); the nationalistic tribute to his homeland, Use (2004); The Rite of Spring to Stravinsky's masterpiece (2008); the autobiographical All Things are Quite Silent (2009) and Romeo and Juliet, to the famous Prokofiev score (2011). In addition to creating and performing, Foniadakis conducts seminars on his personal dance technique. He teaches at the State Dance School, Athens, Greece, Dance Cultural Center studios and Balile de Barrio in Athens, DOCK11 in Berlin, Centre National de la Danse in Lyon and Consevatoire National Supérior Musique et Danse de Lyon, Dansgroep Amsterdam, Henny Jurriëns Studio Amsterdam, and Kuopio Dance Festival.
