@Pop Stars Of The 90s Then And Now
Top 20:The Most Famous 90s Popstars (Then and Now) When most people think of music in the 90s, grunge is typically at the forefront. However, there was also quite a revolution going on in pop music - after all, it was the era of boy bands and the birth of the wildly popular TRL too. Granted, while 90s pop stars and grunge rockers were crazy popular, there was a huge movement in female empowerment anthems as well, a la Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, the huge success of Alanis Morissette - and, of course, the no. 1 selling artist of the 90s (as well as the number one selling female artist of all time), Mariah Carey. This list of 1990s solo artists includes before and after pictures and will clue you in to where some of your favorite 90s performers are now. 1 Jewel Then Jewel was discovered in 1994 and released her first studio album Pieces of You (featuring "Who Will Save Your Soul") in 1995. By 1998, she was singing "The National Anthem" at the Superbowl! Jewel Now Jewel continued to make pop music in to the early 2000s. Her 2003 album 03/04 charted at number 20 on The Billboard Hot 100. These days, the singer is topping the country charts with her new musical stylings, as well as doing children's albums. 2 Shania Twain Then In the mid to late '90s, Shania Twain broke free from the confines of being solely a country singer and experienced a tremendous amount of success as a crossover artist. She scored success with songs like "Come on Over" and "Man, I Feel Like a Woman." Shania Twain Now Twain continued to enjoy crossover success in to the early 2000s. And she still continues to perform. In fact, Twain recently returned to the stage by way of a long term engagement at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. Currently, her Vegas show is scheduled to go on until the end of this year. 3Alanis Morissette Then Alternative pop singer Alanis Morissette rose to prominence with her angry lyrics and desire to seek retribution against the man that broke her heart. Morissette essentially wrote the soundtrack to teen angst in the '90s. Her album Jagged Little Pill produced tracks like "Ironic" and "You Oughta Know" that are still just as well known today as they were in the '90s. Alanis Morissette Now Morissette has not stopped making music. The singer released a series of albums in the early and mid 2000s with varied levels of success. But when her album Havoc and Bright Lights was released in 2012, it hit the Billboard 200 at number 5, proving that she still has it! 4 Lenny Kravitz Then Lenny Kravitz has produced and written songs for a lot of major acts, as well as writing and performing his own music. He grew in popularity in the early '90s and really struck a chord with his 1993 album "Are You Gonna Go My Way." Lenny Kravitz Now 5 Beck 6 Bjork 7 Fiona Apple Then Fiona Apple burst on to the scene with her hit single "Criminal" in the late '90s. The video for the track caused a great deal of controversy because Apple was scantily clad and didn't look a day over 17.. Fiona Apple Now In 2012, Apple released her latest album, The Idler Wheel, which proved that she still has a sizable fan base; it debuted at number three on The Billboard Top 200 and sold over 72,000 copies in the first week it was available. 8 Mariah Carey 9 Tori Amos 10 Liz Phair 11 Ricky Martin Ricky Martin Now Martin's success lasted in to the 2000s, but he has failed to duplicate the wild popularity of his early American solo career. He did, however, publish an autobiography in 2010, take to Broadway in 2011, and guest starred on "Glee" in 2012. 12 Toni Braxton Toni Braxton Now Her 2013 duet album with Babyface, Love, Marriage & Divorce proved that Braxton still has the talent that made her a star; it debuted at number four on the Billboard charts, selling 67,000 copies in its first week. 13 Vanilla Ice He appeared in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze and performed the song "Ninja Rap," but it failed to make a dent on the Billboard charts. Vanilla Ice Now Van Winkle has since released a metal album with a "hardcore" cover of his one hit single and also appeared on a number of reality shows, including VH1's "The Surreal Life." Though he will always be a major part of pop culture, Vanilla Ice probably won't be making anymore hit records any time soon. 14 Sophie B. Hawkins Sophie B. Hawkins Now Hawkins is still active in the entertainment industry: she portrayed Janis Joplin in a stage production of "Room 105" and appeared on an episode of NBC's "Community" as herself in late 2013. 15 Lisa Loeb 16 Sarah McLachlan 17 Lauryn Hill 18 Britney Spears 19 Christina Aguilera 20 Sarah McLachlan
