@CSAV Hawaii: Puu Oo Lava 2011 Perched Pond
Amazing telephoto footage of Madame Pele's lava lake, June 2011, inside Puu Oo crater. Back then, lava was circulating within an elevated pond, spattering, and overflowing the raised edge. Bubble bursts at 1:27. A piece of the edge caves into the pond at 1:42. Current conditions are very different. In July 2011, the entire crater floor uplifted, carrying the perched pond with it. Then in August, the crater flow deflated rapidly, and a new flow broke out at the base of Puu Oo's west flank. Recent deformation makes the area even more unstable than previously, and hence, it remains off-limits to the general public for safety reasons. Please respect the rules of the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Enjoy views of Pu'u O'o from the comfort & safety of your own home, via the USGS web cam: http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/PCcam/ Read about current conditions at Pu'u O'o: http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/activity/kilaueastatus.php Visit the CSAV web site: http://hilo.hawaii.edu/~csav/
