@CSAV Hawaii: Volcanic Tremor on Seismic Drums
As magma moves underground, small earthquakes are produced. Seismic instruments detect and record this volcanic tremor. Modern digital technology provides astonishing methods of analyzing the data, but this footage showcases old-fashioned paper-and-ink seismic drums, comparing 3 events on Kilauea's summit and East Rift Zone: January 1997, June 2007, and March 2011. In all 3 cases, magma beneath the summit of Kilauea moved down the ERZ, producing dike intrusions and eruptions in the Napau Crater area. Watch for a piece of Halemaumau crater floor to collapse at 00:34, producing a small blast of rock particles within the plume.
