It was the best qualities of all the previous games brought together in one massive adventure that set the precedent for the rest of the series in terms of tone, story-telling, character, and gameplay. I did not like this game as a kid, neither Sonic 3 nor Sonic & Knuckles; I thought they were way too difficult compared to the previous game.
