CherieJ Peden's video: World War III Just a Mockumentary Don t Panic

This is a video rip of a mockumentary broadcast by SBS television in Australia in the 90s. The mockumentary (a genre that parodies the reality of real documentary), is set approximately in the early to mid19 80s when the relationship between the West and Warsaw Pact countries were at their lowest ebb, at least since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. What appears so obvious when watching this is how much the world has changed in the ensuing years, the power vacuum since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the breaking up of NATO as a bulwark against the Soviet Union, the increased power of the European Union, and the rise in power of an invigorated Russian nationalism. A lot of newsreel and network footage is interspersed with actors playing various politicians, generals and others caught up in events which never actually transpired, the reason for this being, this film is only fiction pretending to be fact in a "what if this had really happened" scenario. World War III never eventuated, it hasn't started and unless I have my crystal ball, I don't know that it ever will start. So, I don't want to start a panic and I emphasise THIS IS ONLY FICTION. So please enjoy, if that's the right word, and don't get upset. If you would however, like to get upset, listen to the Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast which is in its own way, even scarier than this. World War III, as its known is brilliantly conceived, and even though my disclaimer is genuine, there is no way of knowing how close to reality it may come to be.
