शिव जयंती सुरुवात : १८६९ साली महात्मा फुले यांनी छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज यांची रायगड येथील समाधी शोधून काढली व त्यांच्या जीवनावर सर्व प्रथम प्रदीर्घ पोवाडा लिहिला . रायगडावरील शिवाजी महाराजांच्या समाधीची व्यवस्था सरकारने स्वतःकडे घ्यावी असा अर्ज ज्योतिबांनी केला होता . १८७० साली महात्मा फुले यांनी पुणे येथे पहिली "शिवजयंती " साजरी केली. त्यानंतर १८९५ मधे लोकमान्य टिळकांनी शिवजयंती उत्सव सुरू केला. जनतेने एकत्र येऊन अशा उत्सवांच्या निमित्ताने राष्ट्रप्रेम जागवावं आणि त्याचा वापर ब्रिटिशांविरुद्ध लढा देण्यासाठी करावा असा हेतू यामागे होता.
