In the railway budget of the year 1997–98, a plan was proposed to introduce a superfast train between Coimbatore and Bangalore. On 15 April 1998, Bangalore–Coimbatore Intercity Express train was inaugurated as Train no: 2677. In the year 2008, the service was extended till Ernakulam as Train no: 12677 after few temporary runs. On 13 February 2015, the train derailed on its onward journey to Ernakulam from Bangalore, leading to 10 deaths and injuring 150 people. It is hauled by an Golden Rock-based WDP4D (earlier Erode-based), WDG4 or WDP4B or an Erode-based WDM-3D from Bangalore to Erode. From Erode to Ernakulam, it is hauled by an Erode-based WAP-4. This train runs daily each way, as Train no: 12677 (Ernakulam Exp) departing Bangalore City Junction at 06:10hrs and reaching Ernakulam Junction at 16:55 hrs and Train no: 12678 (Bangalore Exp) departing Ernakulam Junction at 09:10 hrs and reaching Bangalore City Junction at 19:50 hrs. It covers a distance of 587 kilometres (365 mi) in each direction and the journey duration is about 10 hours and 40 minutes. It runs with an ICF rake. The rake of the train usually contains 4 unreserved coaches, 11 second sitting coaches, 2 AC chair car coaches, a pantry car, a high-capacity parcel van, and 2 SLR cars, making a total of 21 coaches. For first time, from July 2nd 2022, full end-to-end run with electric locomotive run has started using a "WAP-7"(locomotive) based out of Royapuram Electric Loco Shed after the commissioning of electrification along the 'Bengaluru(Baiyyappanahalli) - Salem' line. Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna - Bengaluru Station, commonly known as KSR Bengaluru station, Bengaluru City railway station or Bangalore City railway station (station code: SBC) is the main railway station serving the city of Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. It is the busiest railway station in South Western Railway zone of Indian Railways. It is located across the Kempegowda Bus Station. The station has 10 platforms and three entrances. The station features a public aquarium called ′Aquatic Kingdom′ which is functional since 1 July 2021. It includes a 12-foot-long tunnel aquarium, which is India's first. It is developed in collaboration with HNI Aquatic Kingdom. The railway station is served by City Railway Station metro station on the Namma Metro's Purple Line, which opened on 30 April 2016. The railway station is also served by Kempegowda Bus Station. Platforms 1 connects to the Chennai and Salem railway lines. On platforms 8 to 10, service trains arrive via Yeshwantpur from Hubballi-Dharwad. Platforms 1 to 4 terminate at Bangalore. On platforms 5 to 10, service trains depart towards Mysuru. There are railway lines between Platforms 4 and 5 that are used as the railway yard. There are 5 railway lines passing from Bangalore City railway station – to Hyderabad via Guntakal, Chennai via Krishnarajapuram, Salem via Hosur, Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad via Tumkur, Birur. The Bangalore–Chennai railway line via Bangalore Cantonment, Bangarpet, is fully electrified and open for traffic. The Bangalore–Mysore line is also doubled and electrified. Ernakulam Junction railway station (also known as Ernakulam South, code: ERS) is the biggest railway station in the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. Controlling 376 train routes at a time, it is the busiest railway junction station in South India. At ₹158 crore (equivalent to ₹167 crore or US$21 million in 2020) in financial year 2018–19, it is the second largest in terms of passenger revenues in Kerala and the fifth largest in Southern Railway. It is an A1 classified station operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. Ernakulam Junction is also the first fully disabled-friendly railway station in India. Ernakulam Jn is a railway junction with lines branching off from it to four different directions : North towards Chennai/Bangalore (via Palakkad) and Mumbai (via Shoranur–Kozhikode) South towards Thiruvananthapuram via Alappuzha–Kollam South-west towards Willingdon Island and Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS) East towards Thiruvananthapuram via Kottayam–Kollam
