SIP over IPv6 on the other hand, is a triviality. This lecture details how to roll out SIP over IPv6 in today's world, including the tools necessary for doing so. As long as SIP depends on IPv4, it depends on NAT traversal techniques. That includes a dependency on an external RTP proxy and thus, for most users, on a telecom operator. As long as we run SIP over IPv4 it will never be free. SIP over IPv6 can be practiced now, thanks to a number of tools that OpenFortress has developed over the past year. We present them here; they are available as free downloads, albeit often as beta software. SIPproxy64 maps SIP/RTP over IPv4 into SIP/RTP over IPv6 and back. Its size 50 kB and stateless design makes it suitable for the smallest environments. 6bed4 makes it possible to rely on peer-to-peer IPv6 networking everywhere; we will not detail the tunnel design, but conclude that IPv6 connectivity can be assumed everywhere now, a requirement to be able to step forward to SIP over IPv6. 0cpm Firmerware is an open source code base for SIP phones. It is designed as a development platform for hardware manufacturers, and is available to them for free, albeit under GPLv3 so sharing is obligatory. This talk will also highlight ENUM as a transitionary mechanism for going from classic phone numbers to SIP-based, Internet-style telephony. We will also discuss the design of a dual-stack SIP soft phone, using our work on SIP Peers as an example.
