Christina Marie's video: Peloton s 500 Competitor Prime Bike Controversy Echelon s Response

Peloton is no stranger to competition in terms of lesser priced bike models, rivaling their particular bike style, design, and capabilities. So, when it was announced Monday that Amazon was offering a sub $500 bike to their prime members that had an uncanny resemblance to Peloton’s (minus the included screen) AND that this bike was in partnership with Echelon, a long-standing competitor to Peloton… articles were popping up EVERYWHERE exuding love and hate opinions on this partnership. For some it’s a no-brainer why Echelon would offer this model, in fact, they already have 2 bikes of their own at the $999 and $1,199 price point. But a formal partnership with Amazon? That was new… in fact even with the name of “Prime Bike” it makes it seem as if Amazon is wholeheartedly supporting this bike model. According to Tech crunch, Lou Lentine, the CEP of Echelon said that “ The Prime Bike was developed in collaboration with Amazon, aiming to create an amazing, connected bike for less than $500…Amazon looking to us to partner on their first-ever connected fitness product is recognition of our commitment to deliver quality at a reasonable price-point as reflected in our explosive growth over the last year.” Even more surprisingly, 2 days later, Amazon responded back to the statement that the bike was developed “in collaboration with Amazon”, saying that that’s NOT true and they have removed the product from its site and issued statements distancing itself from Echelon. Echelon responded back by saying it was a “miscommunication” and that they had just intended to sell their bike on Amazon. An Echelon fitness spokesperson said “this product was built by Echelon to sell exclusively on. Amazon… we’re working to rebrand the product to get I back up for sale ASAP.” Lastly, while the bike isn’t on Amazon, its available from retailers such as Walmart, where you can find it on their site for $499. So in summary, current Peloton customers can breathe easily knowing that their bikes aren’t being out-priced by a knock-off version that quite closely resembled the real thing. Peloton has already increased its competitive edge by knocking down the price from their original $2,245 price tag to $1,895, making it more accessible. Of course, this is still nearly $1,500 more than the most inexpensive bike model on the market, but, you get what you pay for, and if you’re looking for a well-made product with a motivating community, I would highly suggest giving the bike a try. OR you can wait for Peloton to sell refurbished models from a fraction of the price. There are rumors that Peloton will offer this in the future, but for now, they have suggestions on their site for purchasing refurbished models— for example, you could check out a local online marketplace through Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc. OR the unofficial “Peloton buy sell trade” fb group.
