Transcript: Beechwood Cemetery is about to undergo a much-needed expansion. Nearly $614,000 will be spent on construction of the project. That will include clearing the southwestern wooded area of the cemetery site and installing a bridge across a stream. The expansion will add approximately 390 new standard burial plots to the 23.8-acre, historically African American public cemetery. The project is needed because there are currently fewer than 15 plots available. Some of the new plots will be green burials, which is a more natural process that does not include embalming, burial vaults or grave liners, or impervious coffins. The expansion is expected to be completed by December.
