ClassicalGasMotors's video: 1950 Mercury Custom

@1950 Mercury Custom
1950 Mercury Custom The Mercury Eight was produced from 1939 to 1951 and was slotted between the Ford and Lincoln. There were 3 generations with the 3rd only being created from 1949 to 1951. These cars were totally redesigned and departed from the wide fender look of the 40's to transition into the shoebox era. This generation also would become a legacy in the custom car car world. The Barris Brother's, which includes the famed George Barris, would create the first "lead sled" in 1949 with Sam's personal car which went on to inspire their design for one of the most famous custom cars in history, the Hirohata Merc. These cars are characterized by their heavy modifications and are named for "lead" after the body filler used during that time and "sled" due to the lowering of the cars making them appear to slide down the road. This very cool 1950 Mercury lead sled is a nicely built car with a great look. It has the traditional modifications of the sleds like the nosed/decked hood, frenched headlights, fender skirts, shaved door handles and more. It is painted in a nice two tone Purple and Silver paint job with custom stainless trim separating the two tone. Silver pinstriping has been added to the hood and deck lid but you will find subtle accents also around things like the custom side mirrors and frenched antenna. It has a split front windshield and the glass is all tinted. The bumpers have a great shine and the custom grill has the look from an early Corvette. It is a combination of chrome and painted surfaces which really looks good. The car has a great side profile that totally encompasses the lead sled style. The Purple wheels with Tri-Bar hubcaps look great on it and the Wide Whites are the perfect old school touch. The motor is a big block 454 V8 that runs great. It has been nicely dressed up with a lot of chrome components, Cool Flex hoses, custom Mercury polished valve covers, and a custom painted/chromed batwing style Cadillac air cleaner. You will find more pinstriping accents throughout the engine compartment like on the inner fenders and it has also been modified with a stainless steel plate on the firewall. A polished aluminum radiator with polished overflow tank have been added for cooling along with an electric fan with shroud. The car drives down the road nicely and the motor is backed by a 4 speed automatic transmission and 10 bolt rear end. 4 wheel power disc brakes are in place as well as power steering making it a comfortable driver. The interior has been completely redone in a two tone Purple and Silver to match the body and is in excellent condition. It has dual high back bucket seats sitting to each side of the custom center console. That console houses a large storage compartment, 2 cupholders, and switches for the power windows. Where it feeds into the dash is a custom pinstriped panel that contains the Alpine AM/FM/CD player. The dash wears its original style trim but now as a Dakota Digital gauge set up and inset adjustable vents for the Vintage AC/Heat/Defrost system. In front of the driver is a painted tilt column topped of with a Purple wrapped aftermarket steering wheel and on the column is the shifter and it even has cruise control. The trunk has all been upholstered and provides a ton of storage space. This classic lead sled has traditional styling but combines that with a lot of modern upgrades to make it much more road worthy than it was originally. All of those customizations add up quickly so save the time and money of doing it yourself and take advantage of this already completed hot rod.
