@What happens if you touch toxic sea slugs on the beach
What happens if you touch large sea slug on the beach? Aplysia dactylomela belongs to class Gastropoda and looks like blobs of jelly, lacking any distinguishable shell or limbs, but they have an internalised shell similar to cuttlefish. Sometimes when they’re really scared, they retract their mantel completely and you can see the white shell. Sea hare have next to no predators thanks to a toxic slime and incredible camouflage capabilities. . Should we pick up or touch that Gastropoda if we found one on the beach or catch one swimming or snorkelling? It is very common to see them on the beach being thrown out by huge waves, laying and dying. In spite the fact, that sea hare can swim, they can not swim against the current and sometimes end up on the beach. It’s fine for people to pick them up and return them to the sea, but they should avoid rubbing their eyes or touching their mouth afterwards, and should also wash their hands, even if only in sea water. The reason for this is the toxic dye and slime some sea hares secrete as a result of ingesting toxic algae. The dye is usually purple and released when the gastropods feel threatened, the dye “works as a smoke screen, enabling them to escape from predators”. Sea hare dye and slime can accumulate dangerous toxin known as aplysioviolin. Apparently the toxin molecule can not pass through our skin barrier and if person do not have wound or cuts on their hands it is save to touch them.
