Having been the fly caught in the web of someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), and made to suffer the effects of the skewed perceptions and emotional immaturity predominant therein, I think Doug's lyrics hit the mark from the NPD's view. NPD's can destroy what their victims believe to be a genuine friendship and/or romance, along with the ability to trust another person again. Don't allow your own sense of empathy and caring blindside you to what your own instincts may be revealing to you. The NPD needs help - and only the NPD can acknowledge and therein seek that help. Sometimes, all you can do, is exercise tough love and walk away from the relationship.
