@Heritage Trains Return to Mornington | The Reopening of the Mornington Railway
Heritage Trains Return to Mornington The Resumption of the Mornington Railway Victorian Heritage Railways Hello all, Welcome to a Victoria heritage video. Today we head to the Mornington Railway, who on the weekend of Sunday, the 20th of December, resumed services between Moorooduc and Mornington for the first time since their forced closure due to the lockdown earlier this year. The second last Sunday of 2020 saw a return of trains after the completion of COVID-safe plans for all businesses. The day of the first service, the train was hauled by locomotive T334 with 3 wooden carriages sandwiched between a guards van on each end. The timetable was also altered to allow carriages to be cleaned at Moorooduc, so they operated three shuttles at 10AM, 12PM and 2PM. This video captures clips at various locations along the line while it operates their three scheduled shuttles. Time and location: Shuttle One: 00:30 - Mount Eliza 01:23 - Mornington Station Arrival 04:53 - Mornington Station Departure Shuttle Two: 06:46 - Tanti Park Station 07:52 - Mornington Railway Reserve, Tanti Shuttle Three: 09:02 - Narambi Reserve 10:08 - Mount Eliza The Mornington Railway Preservation Society was established in 1984 after a public meeting with the intention of securing the then closed Mornington line for heritage operations. The Mornington line itself was completed in 1889 with five stations. The line branched out from Baxter Station on the Stony Point line and was single-track with loops and yards at Moorooduc and Mornington. The line was closed by the Victorian Railways in 1981 and over the years between then and the formation of the preservation society, sections of the land at Mornington were sold off to investors, including the site of the original station which is now a shopping centre. Today the line operates from Moorooduc Station to a newly built Mornington Station at Yuilles Rd with a fleet of restored ex-Victorian Railways E and W wooden carriages.
