One day a year, we have an extra opportunity to reflect and honour our moms who have given us so much. Whether she carried you inside of her for nine months or whether you were cared for as her own. Mothers more often than not, are the emotional backbone of the family, providing a sanctuary of love and acceptance as they do their best to help their children grow. However, mothers (like everyone else) are not perfect. We work through our imperfections, the best way we know how, while teaching what WE WISH we had known. As a mother, I am more than aware of the blurred lines between empowering vs. enabling, disagreeing vs. indulging, shaping vs. spoiling. As a naïve young mother I too was going to be one of those perfect moms. You see, as long as I can remember I lived in polarities: kind vs. mean, good vs. bad…Success vs. Failure. As a child I was consumed with not being bad, but now as a mother I needed to be the polar opposite of bad: GOOD! But not just good: PERFECT! Well, needless to say, I did not achieve that but, as a mother I grew. And I continue to grow… The quest for perfection is a futile journey many of us have been on since childhood. We judge our mistakes, or shortcomings, as failures rather than viewing them as unique lessons that come from our individual journey. For all the moms who feel they are failing, this one’s for you… Because… There’s no need to be perfect to inspire your child. Allow them to be inspired by how you deal with your imperfections.
