Corey Helford Gallery's video: Children on the Edge Interview with Japanese Artist Hikari Shimoda

@Children on the Edge | Interview with Japanese Artist Hikari Shimoda
For more information about Hikari Shimoda's exhibit: http://www.coreyhelfordgallery.com/shows/hikari-shimoda-2018/info-press/ The starry-eyed, magical girls and boys at the center of Hikari Shimoda’s paintings have become synonymous with the Nagano, Japan based artist’s work. Poised as spiritual deities or the extraordinary superheroes of popular culture, they represent hope for salvation of a dying modern world - a netherworld bursting with problems as humanity struggles to cope with its imminent demise. With her fourth major solo exhibition, “Children on the Edge”, Shimoda both humanizes and expands on the mythology of her young characters in a series of seventeen new paintings. “Children on the Edge” marks a continuation of Shimoda’s series of the same name, first appearing in her 2016 exhibition for the gallery, “Recycling Humanity” with her portrait entitled, “Child on the Edge.” The series portrays ambiguous children “on the edge,” which Shimoda interprets as having many meanings; the edge between childhood and adulthood, the edge between two worlds, the spirit world and our reality, or the border between the artist’s home country and other countries. Shimoda explains: “I have chosen the concept of “children on the edge” as the main theme to create these works. Children and adults, human beings and gods, souls and the living, and life and death… Everything has a “boundary” and we can grasp the essence of things only when we look at the middle of boundary, which is neither black nor white. The present day is a consequence of boundaries made by past and future.” For up-to-date news and more: http://www.coreyhelfordgallery.com/ Stay connected with us on social media: https://www.facebook.com/coreyhelfordgallery https://twitter.com/coreyhelford https://www.instagram.com/coreyhelfordgallery/ Film by Birdman.
