The reason lies in the defeat of Central Powers against the Allies in World War One. Ottoman Empire was on the side of Central Powers and its territories was being distributed among the winning allies through the Treaty of Sevres. This was not liked by Indian Muslims and they revolted against it. All India Khilafat Committee was formed in Lucknow. Gandhiji was the magician who combined the Khilafat issue with the Non-Cooperation Movement and pitched the consolidated front against the Britishers. The Ottoman Empire was abolished in 1922 and the Caliphate in 1924 by Turkish Nationalists led by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and slowly the movement also faded in India due to devotion of Muslims towards different causes and groups.
