You can follow along as I dye up some new sock yarns in spring colours, including a set of Easter mini egg mini skeins, which always seem to go down well at this time of year. The dyeing process starts with soaking the yarn for at least an hour but I try to put some of the yarn in overnight to get a running start in the morning. Arranging the skeins in the dyepots needs to be done with care as it really does affect how the finished hand dyed sock yarn turns out. For these sock yarn skeins I started by adding subtle dye colours in cold water and citric acid. I try to dye all of my skeins randomly, as that means less pooling when you use the skein of yarn in knitting or crochet. After heating the yarn, which I can only do four dyepots at a time, I then prepare lots of colours for the speckling. Speckled sock yarn is so popular and the new luxury merino sock yarn base I have is really taking the speckles well. Once the speckles are set, I then steam the skeins for a further 20 minutes before leaving them to cool for a few hours before washing. Using a gentle wool wash is important and treating each skein with care prevents everything getting tangled! I soak my yarn in my Belfast sink and never more than 8 skeins at a time. After rinsing and spin drying, the yarn takes 24-72 hours to dry completely, depending on the time of year. This batch was pampered by drying the inglenook with my wood fired aga on for the afternoon and evening. Once everything is dry, its time to twist up each skein to show off those speckles to their best advantage (sometimes twisting hides them all inside!). Then I photograph them all, edit and resize, then use those photos for instagram and in the Etsy listings. These have to be written and checked, and one new listing takes around 20 minutes! Nothing is automated in the hand dyeing process, even the things that you do by computer! This week I dyed only a few skeins compared to a typical week as I wanted to get plenty of footage and film to edit for the video. I hope you enjoy watching and please do add any comments or questions below the video.
