Craig Yack's video: The End - Half Life Alyx Oculus Quest with Link 14

@The End - Half Life Alyx, Oculus Quest with Link #14
Well, I estimated two 45 minute videos. At least I'm consistent. I had suspicions about the Vault, and I pretty much called it. I won't lie, though - I couldn't play this game when it came out, and I couldn't stand to not know the big revelation after the credits. So that was pretty much my only spoiler going in, other than knowing of other voice actors playing their parts. I'm glad that the rest of the game I was able to play blind. Who was that woman speaking to the Advisor? I assumed it was Judith Mossman, but I don't know. So, game review - definitely a technically competent VR game. Not perfect. There were some not so intuitive puzzles, especially having to lift that sheet metal at the beginning of this video - I assumed it was a collapsed duct. I wish the gunfights would have had more energy to them, with more enemies. I was ready for ferocious fights with running and ducking like those in Half Life 2. And the revelation after the credits? Well, we all know the momentum of the story of Half Life 2 and its Episodes would have naturally carried into a specific set of planned events for Episode 3 or Half Life 3, whichever came first. The revelation here, I'm very sure, was not what Valve had planned from the beginning - but turning things on its head I would bet is partly their response to the fans, and a more or less fitting answer to their long absence. I was expecting this game to allow Alyx to take important steps to help the resistance become what it is in Half Life 2 - not allow the series to retcon. It's a wow moment, but for me, it doesn't really carry. Gamewise, I felt PSVR Resident Evil 7 was a much more packed VR experience. But I'm still glad I played this one - it's up there with RE7, Dirt Rally, Borderlands VR, and Gorn for my favorite VR games. Half Life 2, though, still blows everything else away generally. That game will always take me back to my game-loving roots - as someone who loves games and someone who wants be part of developing one someday. Sorry some of my puzzle solving was so slow. Hope you enjoyed the series. I have no complaints about how the Oculus Quest ran this game through Link with the cable I used and the connection I have. I don't know how it would run with the USB 2.0 cable, and I doubt I'll be testing it. Half Life Alyx is one of the more demanding games for the tech, understandably, and I wouldn't trust anyone who says that a lesser cable than the official one or its recommended counterparts plays the game without any noticeable issues. I am curious how it would have ran with the Rift S with a direct feed from the video card. I don't plan to find that out any time soon (despite seeing the Rift S in stock only yesterday). Update: On a second playthrough (VERY easy, even on Hard...), I'm noticing that if there is a lot of video activity with variance, like rapid firing the Combine pistol at close range in the dark, the video will stutter, and the sound will drop off at times and fail to report proper position. So there is a challenge for the Link cable to get the proper amount of data across to the headset. Certainly not enough to make me want to stop playing or call the Quest junk, though. Still, a nicer headset that doesn't drop off like that would be nicer. This happened most in the pitch blackness in the bottom level below all the barnacles in the hotel while killing all the black headcrabs after shutting off the power, and the heavy fire fight below the billiard room with the two electric dogs and all the zombies with the light blue alien fauna illuminating the corners. If I did have one complaint, it's that the lower FOV, the weight of the quest, and the unsteadiness of the tracking, although they were fine, kept the VR experience from telegraphing more directly to my body responses - frankly I think it made my responses more constrained. My VR roomspace is rather small, too. A wireless, light VR headset with a nicer FOV and accurate hand tracking and looser controllers would have been much nicer. Running i7-8700, RTX SUPER 2060, 16GB RAM, Oculus Link official cable with 2 Gbps connection (Type C jack on back of mobo, no adapters, enough power to charge).
