Nepal vs Netherlands, 14th Match, Group A
ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier
Despite a close defeat to the four-time world champions, West Indies, Nepal’s chances of qualifying for the Super Six stage in the World Cup qualifiers remain intact. Nepal fell short by 101 runs while chasing a target of 340 set by the West Indies.
Nepal’s innings ended at 238 runs as they lost all their wickets, with Karan KC being caught out in the penultimate over. Despite putting the strong West Indies under pressure initially and restricting them to 216 runs for 3 wickets in the first 15 overs, Nepal faced a record target. The West Indies piled up a massive total of 339 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.
Nepal struggled from the start of their innings, losing wickets in quick succession after opener Kushal Bhurtel departed for just 5 runs in the second over. Although Arif completed a half-century, he couldn’t contribute the required runs. Ashif, Rohit, Dipendra, Gulsan, and Karan managed decent scores but couldn’t stay at the crease when needed, resulting in a significant defeat for Nepal in this crucial match.
Earlier, Nepal suffered an 8-wicket loss to Zimbabwe in their first match, but they bounced back with a 6-wicket victory over the United States, earning them 2 points. With the latest outcome, Nepal currently sits in fourth place in the table. The Netherlands placed third, holds a superior run rate despite having the same number of points. The Netherlands is yet to face the West Indies.
The upcoming match between Nepal and the Netherlands will be crucial. If the Netherlands emerges victorious on Saturday, Nepal’s World Cup journey will come to an end. However, if Nepal wins that match and subsequently loses to the West Indies, they will secure a spot in the Super Six.
While Zimbabwe and the West Indies have secured their places in the Super Six with strong performances in previous stages, the battle for the third spot remains between Nepal and the Netherlands. The United States’ chances have been eliminated ahead of their final match.
A total of three teams from Group A and three teams from Group B will qualify for the Super Six stage. In Group B, Ireland and the UAE have suffered defeats in both of their opening matches. Oman has won both matches, while Sri Lanka and Ireland have each secured a victory. The teams advancing from this group to the next stage will likely be determined on Friday.
Following the Super Six matches, the top two teams will earn qualification for the World Cup in India.
