The controls can feel ‘Sticky’ at times. Rapidly pressing the fire button whilst trying to aim in a different direction will cause Andy to fire in the same direction. It takes time to condition yourself to take a moment to pause the firing to aim in a new direction, something uncommon in most games. Also, enemies such as the spiders have invincibility frames whilst the player does not. It can feel cheap when a spider jumps over a blast to devour you. Indeed, there are several deaths in the game that you wouldn’t even be aware had you not already played the game before and knew it was coming. Whilst you do respawn quickly after death, it does stink of questionable game design. The CGI falls just short of horrifying at times, and is massively different from the main game in tone. Whilst the main game paints an atmosphere of a dark, brooding and inhospitable atmosphere, the cut scenes are often silly and cheerful, with childish music. It feels like a completely different game from the horrific deaths the main character can endure, getting his spine broken by wall worms, devoured by shadow monsters or burned alive. However, for all its many flaws, Heart of Darkness oozes charm, which Is it’s main saving grace. The weird dichotomy between the whimsical cut scenes and the dark gameplay could be seen as an adventure from the mind of a child. Someone who is troubled, who has dark fears that genuinely trouble him. Whilst they plague his mind, he starts to think up scenarios where he overcomes these fears which plays out the more light-hearted sections (Would also explain why one of Amigos just casually has her tits out constantly, typical teenage horniness). Perhaps I’m reading into it too much… If you don’t die and don’t include the cutscenes, the game could be finished in just over an hour. Thus, what you have is a fun, bite-sized adventure with magic, Tesla guns and shadow monsters which is pretty damn fun to play. Also, given how this game was made by only a handful of people, I can forgive some of its shortcomings. Seriously, look at the credits, the same 6 names get repeated like 10 times…
