It really can't hold a candlelight to the main games. About 90% of the enemies cannot hit you if you have your back turned to them (Mr X being an exception), a factor that you can utilise to cheese past enemies and avoid damage. The voice acting has taken a turn for the worse (it was never spectacular to begin with), and the graphics certainly don't seem as timeless without the pre-rendered backgrounds. A lot of the assets seem to have been directly lifted from resident evil 2 without a whole lot of effort gone in to making sure they work in a first-person game. Without severe backtracking, it would be impossible to obtain all of the different handguns in the game. Survivor was intended to be played multiple times with different paths to increase replay value. I ended up choosing the routes that I believed to be the easiest to complete. Different play styles will find certain enemies easier or harder naturally, so feel free to take whichever route you wish. I personally adore the damage handgun D deals whilst also having unlimited ammo. Interestingly enough, this game was originally intended as a light gun game. It makes sense given the controls, as a sort of off rail shooter. As a wee pupper, I didn’t get any say in what we did and did not buy. I doubt many were willing to pay for such a gimmicky contraption that wouldn’t work on many games. It wasn’t until the Nintendo Wii came out that such motion controls really became mainstream. Add to that the fact that the light gun compatibility was removed from the North American release due to shooting games being partially blamed for the columbine massacre, and I doubt many ever played with anything other than a controller. With a controller, it has a number of issues. It makes sense to go for headshots in a game where you can aim (special forces member’s consistently aiming for the body of someone 2 feet away was infuriating in the other Resident Evil games), but this isn’t really a viable tactic here. Every time you score a successful hit on an enemy, it will automatically snap on to the centre of the foe. Given the unlimited ammo for handguns, weapons you will be using for the majority of the game, taking the time to aim up after every shot and go for headshots will actually take longer to kill enemies than just piling ammo into their torso. A zombie game where aiming for the torso is the optimal strategy… Overall, the game met with mostly unfavourable reviews. Whilst I had fun with it as a child, my tiny brain not taxed by the puzzles the rest of the series had to offer, even then I could see the issues. Sadly, the years have been less kind and all the faults that existed back then are even more glaring nowadays.
