Quest for the Dragon bone staff came out to mixed to reviews, owing to the fact that it was mostly a remake of the 1990 game, King’s bounty with dated core mechanics. As someone who is sick of the crappy practices of modern AAA games and who mostly focuses on indie or older games, this doesn’t bother me now, nor did it when I was a child. A good game is like a good prostitute, Age doesn’t matter if the experience is fantastic…please don’t tell my mother I said that… Trying to get this game working on an emulator was an absolute arse however. If you are running it on PCSX2 you will find frequent slowdowns during the actual fights. The only way I found to combat this was to run it in software mode and then keep fiddling until it started to run smoothly. I know that’s not the most helpful advice. Just go forth and fiddle weary gamer! The game is mostly randomised which leads to a great level of replay value. I Played through this game maybe 4 or 5 times and then uploaded my best attempt. I opt for the sorcerer, despite having weak stats, the ability to use magic from the go without having to pay to train is too vital. You can tackle the game however you want and indeed, visiting the later islands to get good artefacts and a strong best is a solid strategy, but I tried to focus on one island at a time so it was easier to follow. There may be some confusion. When I look at the map to see where the Dragon Bone staff is, there is a spire in the picture. This is where the Wizard tower which trains you to use magic would have been had I played any of the other characters. It’s why I was able to pinpoint the location down so easily. Difficulty only affects the time you have to complete the game to the best of my knowledge. The absolute shortest amount of in game time that the game can be won in is 25 days. You can only teleport to towns and castles once you have already visited the place and sailing to a new island will always wind you down to the end of the week (with a week being 5 days in this game). Sailing to a minimum of 3 islands plus the 10 days to dig for the staff takes us to 25 and that is only if you are fortunate to come across time stop spells early in the game. The 200 days you are given for impossible difficulty is quite generous and winnable even without these spells. A strategy I always like to finish off with is using ghosts. Ghosts are mediocre stat wise, but will convert any killed units into more ghosts. This can be dangerous as they have a very high Leadership requirement for their stats. As such it’s easy to convert too many ghosts and have them go out of control, killing your own troops. An out of control ghost stack can be nigh By Spamming Raise control spells, you can cap out our leadership. Send a group of ghosts to kill General Piraxus’s Peasants and we are left with 5000 ghosts, something that literally nothing in the game can stand against.
