In order to ensure your timing on your classic is in sync with your handheld, you have to lock the timing on your handheld and match that timing to what you're measuring on your timing light. The phasing cap allows your rotor button to have optimum alignment with your distributor cap when the distributor fin pickup is aligned with the magnetic sensor. This helps ensure you're not getting spark jump, arching, or any other abnormalities that could cause drivability issues.
