First, review the Technical Data Sheet online for the most comprehensive details and coverage charts. Depending on your project, you may need the following tools and materials: • Paint pan and stir stick • Paint brush • One-quarter to one-half inch smooth nap roller • Medium hard grout float • Membrane mil gauge • 2" CUSTOM Waterproofing Reinforcing Tape • 100% Silicone Sealant • Rubbing alcohol for cleaning tools • Eye protection and • Impervious gloves, such as nitrile The installation area must be well-ventilated. Before getting started, prepare the substrate, such as mortar bed and backerboard, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure that surfaces are clean and dry, as contaminants could prevent a strong bond. All wet areas must be properly pitched to drains. Stir RedGard SpeedCoat well before pouring a small amount into a paint tray, then replace the lid on the container. Apply the first coat, starting with the walls. Use a nap roller and smooth, overlapping strokes to achieve continuous coverage. Then, coat all drain assemblies, plumbing protrusions and changes of plane using a paint brush. Embed CUSTOM’s 2-inch wide Waterproofing Reinforcing Tape into the transitions. Place the smooth fabric side of the tape into the membrane and proceed with completing the first coat. For large gaps, pre-treat transitions with CUSTOM’s Commercial 100% Silicone Sealant. Allow the sealant to dry until tacky, then waterproof within 3 hours. Once transitions have been treated, use a nap roller to apply RedGard SpeedCoat on smooth floors. Over extensive, rough or porous surfaces, such as standard mortar beds, use a grout float to ensure pores are filled. Always spread to create a continuous film at a depth of 6 mils. RedGard SpeedCoat does not change color – it goes on red and stays red. You’ll know the cure is complete when the surface is dry to the touch. This takes about an hour, depending on jobsite conditions. Once the first coat has cured, visually inspect it and use a paint brush to fill any voids or pinholes. Now, apply a second continuous coat with a nap roller to waterproof the shower floor. Carry the second coat up the walls 3 inches above any curbs to create a shower pan. Allow both coats to cure before flood testing or installing tile. Protect the membrane if it will not be tiled soon after curing. One gallon covers most standard size showers. That’s approximately the same coverage as 3 and a half gallons of traditional waterproofers.
