@Dak Prescott Preseason Week 1 Highlights | Cowboys @ 49ers
Santa Clara – Barring all of the drama in the news lately, it was nice to see some Dallas Cowboys football as they opened their preseason against the San Fransisco 49ers for the second straight year. Starters on offense played one drive while the starters on defense played two. For starters, no pun intended, the first-team offense looked strong marching down the field, but eventually stalling out and settling for a field goal. Dak Prescott was 4-4 with 23 yards passing and even caught a reception off of a deflected pass he threw. Amari Cooper has been nursing a heel strain so he sat out of the game. This opened up an opportunity for us to see Michael Gallup as the number one receiver in the offense. He did not disappoint on the first drive with 2 receptions for 19 yards and also drew a pass interference call. Blake Jarwin showing that he deserves his place on the field had an impressive first half with 4 receptions for 51 yards. Due to his recent contract hold out, Ezekiel Elliott sat out of the game. This gave us a look at rookie 4th-round draft pick Tony Pollard with 4 rushes for 16 yards. Though an extended look would have been nice, it seemed that he looked comfortable in the offense. The back quarterback situation is very interesting. Cooper Rush had an average outing throwing 16/26 for 142 yards. Mike White was 9/20 for 87 yards. 7th-round draft selection, Mike Weber had 6 rushes for 18 yards. He also lost a fumble. Undrafted rookie free-agent, Jon’Vea Johnson looked impressive running very nice routes with 3 catches for 30 yards. In 2018, Cedrick Wilson spent the season on the Injured Reserve. He looked strong Sunday against the 49ers with 3 catches for 36 yards. On the other side of the ball, the first-team defense held the 49ers offense to 10 plays for 34 yards in the two drives they had. Jaylon Smith reminded us why he is an elite caliber linebacker on the first drive tackling a back at the line of scrimmage. Jourdan Lewis and Chidobe Awuzie also both had tackles at the line of scrimmage during their time in the game. Awuzie had great coverage on the final third down failed conversion by the 49ers. In terms of the reserves, there were a few notable storylines. Undrafted rookie, Luke Gifford stood out on the defensive side of the ball coming up with 2 tackles, a pass deflection, and an appealing interception. Unfortunately, he was carted off the field with an ankle sprain. His return is yet to be determined, but he looked to show enough on tape to make the 53-man roster if he does not return this preseason. Fellow rookie 6th-round selection, Donovan Wilson also had an interception. Jalen Jelks, 7th-round draft pick had a sack. Taco Charlton, a 2017 1st-round selection, was also able to provide a quarterback hit. He is a roster bubble player. This year’s first player selected was defensive tackle, Trysten Hill. He did not show much in this game as he didn’t register a tackle. Last season, the Cowboys cut Dan Bailey who had been the starter for 7 years for a more cap-friendly, Brett Maher. The replacement has had issues with field goals inside the 40-yard mark and to the concern of many missed a 35-yard attempt on Sunday. Published by: Nicco Vocaturo
