DHVANI THEORY * The word DHVANI was first used in Atharvaveda. * Here the word DHVANI does not mean the sound of the music. * The founder of DHVANI theory is Aanandwardhana. * He was the thinker of the 9th century. * He introduced DHVANI theory in Dhavanyaloka. * DHVANI is the soul of the poem. * We will have to understand following things Vyangyarth and Vachyarth Vyangyarth * It is called suggested element or suggested meaning or implied meaning. * It means what the poet wants to suggest you. * The meaning of the poem is more important than words used in the poem. Vachyarth * The meaning of the words what we are reading is called Vachyarth * It is called conventional meaning or expressed meaning. * The poetry in which DHVANI theory is used is called Dhvanikavya. There are three types of the Dhvanikavya. (1)Uttamkavya : * We called it Dhvani proper in English. * Vyangyarth is more important than Vachyarth. * It means suggested elements are important in this kind of poetry. (2) Gunibhuta kavya : *.Vachyarth is more important than Vyangyarth in this kind of poetry * The meaning of the words used in the poetry is important. (3) Chitrakavya : * Suggested elements are negligible in this kind of poetry. * Some thinkers did not accept the DHVANI theory. Pratiharenduraj, Kuntaka , Bhatnayaka, Mahimbhatta, Kshemendra. * Inspite of their objection DHVANI theory is widely accepted in the world. * The criticism wrote by Abhinavgupta on the Dhavanyaloka is called Lochana.
