Ukraine's military says Russian forces are now focusing on an aggressive operation to seize complete control of the eastern Donbas region. Following Russia's failure to take Kyiv and its withdrawal from northern areas around the capital, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russian forces are preparing for another assault on the city of Kharkiv. The eastern city of Kramatorsk, which was spared by much of the fighting until now, has been hit by Russian shelling. Thousands of residents are trying to flee west. After four weeks under Russian occupation, the world is now gradually finding out the scale of the horrors inflicted on the town of Bucha. Grim evidence of killings and torture has emerged since Russian troops retreated. Bodies lying in the streets and piled up in mass graves. Those who survived are telling their stories. DW's Nick Connolly visited Bucha to hear first-hand what residents experienced. The besieged city of Mariupol has been under constant Russian bombardment since the beginning of the war. More than half the population has fled, while up to 170,000 others remain trapped without food, water or electricity. DW Correspondent Rebecca Ritters met one doctor who spent 25 days and nights helping the injured until she too, took the chance to flee. The EU and the US are set to impose tough new sanctions on Moscow in response to the atrocities in Bucha. Washington is expected to ban all new investments in Russia, as well as target further members of Putin's inner circle and the country's banking system. Meanwhile, EU lawmakers are meeting to discuss a fifth round of sanctions, including blocking Russian ships and trucks from entering the EU, as well as a ban on Russian coal - the first time the EU has taken aim at the Russian energy industry.
