How To Remove Hard Credit Inquiries From Your Credit Report This is part six of the Increase Your Credit Score Series. In this video, we will discuss the difference between hard and soft inquiries and how to get them removed from your credit report. What is a hard credit inquiry? Let's say you want to get a new car. You go to the dealership and find the car of your dreams. You ask the dealer about financing. Here is what they do: they don't just check one finance company to try and get you approved. They try multiple financial institutions. Mortgage companies also do the same thing. If a lending decision is being made then the inquiry will be considered a hard inquiry. Multiple hard inquiries do affect your credit score and they remain on your credit report for 25 months. What is a soft inquiry? If you check your own credit or someone checks your credit to do a background check. this is considered a soft inquiry and does not affect your credit score. If you have a current credit card and the financial institution wants to increase your limit they may check your credit (soft inquiry) without your permission. Again, soft inquiries do not affect your credit. To avoid inquiries it is best to get pre-approved before you go car, loan or mortgage shopping. If you can not avoid this then once the inquiries hit your credit report contact the companies who made the inquiries and request that they remove them. Two hard inquiries are the most you want on your credit report within a given period. This will not hurt your credit score. Can inquiries be removed? Yes! If you check your credit report and notice inquiries you did not authorize you can file a dispute with the credit reporting agency. If you did authorize the inquiries you can contact the companies that made the inquiries and request that they remove them. I will put the link in the description section below.
